We had the pleasure of attending the second sold out screening of short film, Believe That at the Duke of York cinema, with our surplus food featuring as a post screening refreshment cooked up by the team from Community Oven.
The film follows the journey of ‘Team Santos’, three players from one of our charitable projects, Brighton Table Tennis Club (BTTC). It features three of their talented and determined young men called Harry Fairchild, Andrew Tonkin & Chris O’Flinn as they prepare to represent their country at the European Down’s Syndrome Championships.
The 30-minute documentary, Believe That is an uplifting and educational look at an under represented community; it presents a heartfelt insight into the focal trio, highlighting a depth of emotion, humour and individuality that was felt by many of the evenings fellow film goers.
Tim Holtam Founder and Director of Brighton Table Tennis Club said: “BTTC are absolutely delighted with the public response to the world premiere of Believe That. We are immensely proud of the players and coach in the film; it is a great story that has been told wonderfully by the incredibly talented Director, Caleb Yule.”
After an early morning visit to our warehouse, Community Oven’s two volunteers sourced the variety of surplus vegetables and ingredients in preparation for the evening’s culinary feast. The alfresco reception starred free pizzas made from our surplus food, provided by the founder of Community Oven Damien Pestell and his lovely team.
Dot, Director of Community Engagement at Community Oven tells us, “Our aim is to bring people together through food in the communities that we work in. We believe eating and cooking together forms important social bonds which are essential to all of us”.
There is one last chance to see this inspiring film taking place on 6 August, also at the Duke of York Picturehouse.
