Every week is Volunteers’ Week at FareShare

We have been celebrating National Volunteers’ Week for the last seven days here at our warehouse. And what a week it’s been! On top of volunteers delivering over 12 tonnes of food to over 100 charities and community groups this week, we have been having fun with thank you cards, selfie frames, and lots and lots of cake.

Catching up with Maddie, our Volunteer Coordinator, she talks to us about the importance of celebrating our volunteers.

Here at FareShare every week is Volunteers’ Week. They are at the heart of everything we do. Not only do they help our operation run smoothly, they bring so much joy to the environment. They work from 8.30am-8pm in all weathers to keep operations flowing and do so with smiles, laughter and positivity. They feedback their great ideas and opinions with the staff team which have shaped FareShare Sussex to be an efficient and fun place to be.

I can’t understate the importance of volunteer recognition, we love to celebrate their hard work in any way we can. We thank our volunteers every time they come in, but Volunteers’ Week has been a great opportunity to dedicate a week to recognise their amazing work.”

Roma has volunteered for over three years. She tells us “Volunteers never cease to amaze me, we come from all walks of life but we all come together as one to help people in need. Maddie works very hard – and not just this week! – to recognise the hard work we all do. It’s great that our hard work doesn’t go unnoticed.”

As a small token of our appreciation, this week each volunteer was given a thank you card signed by all the staff and a pack of chocolates thanks to talented chocolatier Cocoa Crystal (who also happens to be our warehouse assistant Emily!)

Although you’d be hard-pressed to find any volunteers that are in it for the glory, we’re always finding new ways to thank our food heroes all year round. Two of our team have been nominated and won a free stay in a hotel thanks to charity Room to Reward. We also hold thank-you events and hope to arrange more of these soon. If anybody or company wants to help us reward our team please get in touch today.

Excitingly, we have received funding to install a community kitchen which is being built this month, which will mainly benefit our volunteers through cookery lessons, shared meals and regular events.

This year we asked our charity members to pass on some feedback to our hardworking volunteers and it was heart-warming reading their messages of thanks.

One project said ” we love your smiles when you arrive with food, your helpful attitude and friendliness! Our clients really appreciate the food they receive from FareShare!”

Another shared ” Thank you to all of you, your work helps families in serious need have food on the table and prevents many many children going hungry. “
