It’s been over two months since the UK began to feel the impact of the Covid-19 outbreak.

Here at FareShare Sussex we have made changes to the way we operate, including introducing strict social distancing measures in the warehouse, signing up new members through self-assessment and adding new pick-ups and deliveries to our busy daily schedules.

However, the biggest changes have been around how our charity members have adapted their services to meet the changing needs of the community throughout the pandemic. We have also signed up lots of new members who have quickly set up new hubs providing food parcels or takeaway meals to vulnerable people in lockdown.

We could fill pages and pages with the amazing work FareShare members are doing with the food we provide, but here are just a handle of examples of the brilliant but vital work happening on the frontline.

Littlehampton Community Fridge

Normally operating out of Littlehampton Library, the project had to quickly move to a new home, and has since grown from just one fridge-freezer to five fridges and four freezers. Partnering with Citizen’s Advice, over 700 parcels have been delivered to vulnerable households.

Founder, Sarah Renfrey said: “There has been an amazing response to the community from various groups and charities, and we are pleased that we can still play our part by still saving good food from being wasted, and help get it to people who need it.”

The Black and Minority Ethnicity (BAME) Community Partnership Foodbank

The Black and Minority Ethnicity (BAME) Community Partnership Foodbank was set up to help struggling BAME families provide food for their loved ones during these unprecedented times.

Juliet, from the project says, “The pandemic has made it increasingly difficult for the members in our community, especially those who already faced food insecurity, which is why it is vital that we provide them with the support they need to sustain themselves and their children.

To get surplus food from FareShare was such a blessing, it enabled us to help a lot more families! The fresh produce was especially welcomed from our collectors, and we look forward to continuing to work with FareShare to help families in need as much as we can! 42 referrals comprising of 23 children and 49 adults.”

East Brighton Food Co-operative

The Crew Club is a vital community hub in Brighton’s Whitehawk offering a range of free services for the neighbourhood. Forced to close following the Government’s lockdown announcements, the co-founder Darren Snow along with local resident Brian Coyle, started an emergency response fund, and out of this the East Brighton Food Co-operative was born. They are now providing hundreds of meals or food parcels every day to those in need out of two sites in the area.
