Last Thursday we said goodbye to our intern Adele. Adele came to us as a paid intern through the Sussex University summer intern programme. Here she writes and reflects on her experience at FareShare Sussex. Read all about her hard work, best memories and learnings. Thanks Adele, we’re proud of you and we wish you all the best!

At the start of July I joined FareShare Sussex as a Project Intern. My main tasks have included managing social media with the other intern, Luna, contacting local community groups to expand the employability scheme, and carrying out research in regards to our carbon footprint. Besides, working in the warehouse and on the vans has been very rewarding as I have been able to see the complex process of receiving, sorting, and redistributing food from start to finish.

I can’t forget to say how much I have enjoyed meeting all of the devoted volunteers that are the beating heart of FareShare Sussex, alongside talking to our community food members and other community groups about the great work that they do in their local areas.

– Adele

My experience at FareShare over the last ten weeks has prepared me for my career and  enabled me to grow my professional skill set through communicating with other organisations and community leaders, as well as managing my own project from start to finish. Getting to and through university has definitely not been easy for me, especially with the pandemic over the past two academic years. The time I have spent here at FareShare Sussex has changed my outlook on what I can achieve after university. It has boosted my confidence in both myself and my abilities as well as it has helped me to understand how much I have learnt from my studies and other experiences.

The greatest takeaway from my internship is that although there is a large amount of work that needs to be done to support businesses and communities to fight food waste and tackle food hunger, there is space for hope and collaboration, where brilliant people come together and make a difference!

I’d like to thank the team for being so welcoming and supportive. I’ll always remember these past few months with a smile and I look forward to being involved with FareShare Sussex in the future.
