At FareShare Sussex we supply food to over 150 charity projects that work with vulnerable members of the community. One of these vital schemes we deliver food to is Stopover: a supported housing project run by the organisation Impact Initiatives, that provides a home for young women who have nowhere to live.
Often they are individuals who have experienced years of trauma, and have little family support or adults they can trust in their lives. Stopover provides a crucial pathway for these young women to establish independent living: starting with constant 24 hour support through to just one hour’s support a week. Stopover has six houses and a single committed team of staff, that establish positive and long-lasting connections with the girls.
The sorts of skills that the young women are supported in developing range from budgeting, healthy eating, managing substance use, and accessing education or employment opportunities. Many of the young women keep in touch with the Stopover team even once they have moved on to successful and full independent living, as the caring relationships formed at Stopover have been so important to them.
Impact Initiatives kindly thanked us for helping them to feed the girls in two of their stopover houses for free during lockdown.
We are so grateful and don’t know what we would have done without you.they told us.
Elle, one of the support workers at Stopover, said:
FareShare are absolutely amazing. They’re here come rain, come shine, come the world gone into pandemic lockdown, with a smile in their eyes when they’re wearing a face covering. They do an absolutely incredible job at supporting vulnerable young women throughout, with the tastiest ingredients and meals. Eternally grateful for their work.
We are delighted to be able to support such a fantastic service with our food deliveries, and to hear of the positive impact it has on those that need it the most.
