Supporting volunteers with FareShare Futures

FareShare Sussex is proud to be part of the Interreg 2 Seas ‘FLAVOUR’ project.  As one of  ten European partners, we are working on this project to tackle issues of food waste and poverty alongside creating pathways to employment and supporting people living in food insecurity.

As part of the FLAVOUR we launched our first FareShare Futures programme in February 2020. Over six weeks, six participants took part in job readiness workshops and personal coaching sessions, as well as volunteering in our warehouse and joining food distribution runs out on our vans to visit community food members across Sussex and Surrey.

Examples of the sessions included:

  • communication skills in difficult situations
  • CV and cover letter writing
  • interview techniques
  • identifying goals, strengths and weaknesses
  • group working activity on the creation of a community pantry

The course proved to be successful, with two interviews for employment lined up after the training. Unfortunately these interviews were cancelled as the Covid-19 pandemic took hold. The impact of the pandemic has revealed just how important employability training is in an increasingly competitive environment.

Participant feedback from the course was overwhelmingly positive.

The course has really helped me with my confidence and self-esteem.”

A lot of the work we did together was fun, confidence-boosting and for me a great help.”

Since April 2020 FareShare Sussex have been working on implementing new programmes to ensure that we can continue helping our current and prospective volunteers to develop their skills at FareShare. With the launch of CareShare, our volunteer wellbeing hub, and the creation of a role of Lead Volunteer on each shift, we are confident that we will be able to help more people to access employment opportunities and make volunteering with FareShare a personal development opportunity as well as helping to fight hunger and tackle food waste.

After a necessary break during lockdown, our next FareShare Futures course will be running in late summer for a new eight day training programme over four weeks. Places will be limited due to social distancing measures. If you, or someone you work to support would be interested in the programme then please contact for more information.
